Celebrating A Traditional Swedish Midsommar with Marta Vargas
It’s Midsommar weekend! Originating from a pagan fertility ritual, this time of the year has now turned into one of the most important weekends for all Swedes. With all its quirky and fun traditions, you really have to experience this custom at least once in your life.
Our FvF Contributor with Spanish roots, Marta Vargas celebrated it last year on the island of Grinda in the Stockholm Archipelago. Preparations included dressing up, making flower crowns, dancing around the fertility pole, eating potatoes with herring and mustard sauce, and drinking loads and loads of schnapps. The party goes on until the early morning defying darkness on Midsommar’s eve.
